meanwhile, back at the ranch…
*On obsessive repeat: Cat Power’s new cover album, Jukebox. Marshall breathes life in Sinatra’s “New York, New York,” James Brown’s “Lost Someone” channels the lone person adrift in an empty nightclub in the gloaming, “Metal Heart” is soulful, melodic, and will rip the heart right out of your chest. Buy this album, now. Like.Right.Now. Close second: Sia’s Some People Have Real Problems. Diggable Track: “The Girl You Lost to Cocaine.”
*On the shelf: For the month of February, I told myself that my world needed to be all fluff and pomp. All pink-hued covers and glossy magazines. The simple things. Britney. Lindsay. Covers donning uncorked bottles of champagne. So while I’ve been devouring reads like and issues of Instyle, People, and Glamour and dvds of Project Runway (Christian must win!!) at an exceedingly alarming rate, the good, rich stuff keeps calling my name. Think of the scene in Requiem for a Dream where the stocked fridge tortures and taunts a very gaunt Ellen Barkin. The good people at Powells got me cracked out on (don’t you love those indie booksellers, those magical, lovable pushers of great literature) A.J. Albany’s Lowdown. I’m also fiending after Joe McGinniss Jr.’s , the very brilliant artisan of the pen Lydia Millet’s , the rest of the damned Mishima collection, Duras’ , and wondering, wondering, wondering about Nabokov’s Laura.
*Obligatory book update: got some love from Newsday, Library Journal, and Dame Magazine, and I got some love from Venus Zine and Page Six Magazine (however, we’re going to ignore the story’s headline).
