get dressed: sunday brunch dress shop

want this: right now Although I’m proud of the nearly all-black wardrobe that I’ve cultivated over the years, relieved that I nearly escaped my Anthropologie precious phase intact (although I do still own three beautiful items from the store), and grateful that my tastes have evolved from designer and expensive to emerging and worth it, sometimes I find myself pining for a flirty dress. Over the years I oscillated between the extremes (minimalist vs. Little House in the Prairie), and I’ve finally discovered a middle ground. You can enjoy a ruffle without going all mad about it. You can snag a skirt with a swing and still have rows of tailored blazers, fitted cardis, studded bags, and 4inch heels. Summer is upon us (could it be true?), and I’m delirious for Sunday dresses.

Although my present budget comes courtesy of a Bank of America credit card, I can only window-pant, and when I learned of the utterly delicious dress shop, Sunday Brunch Dress, I nearly fainted. Why the immediate attraction? Check out their About page:

Every woman writes her own story. So shouldn’t our own stories be the ones we love best? Like the ones we find in old books with leather-bound covers, spines worn smooth by many hands, the pages faded from many readings. Not because we want to feel like everyone who read that story before. But because a story so special to so many, that it was read and reread, must have been special in a slightly different way to each person. That’s why we get excited opening up those old books, because now that old, loved story is about to become special to us, special in a slightly different, slightly new, way.

Dresses are like that. No matter how elegant, how timeless, a dress still billows in breezes and swishes in doorways, is always a little different with each wearing and on each person.

Because you can treasure a first edition or a great book (as I do), yet still revere and attach memories to a garment. And I love the voice of the site – you feel as if you’re in a small, provincial New England seaside village and two of your best friends are chatting about dresses that are just too beautiful to let go. With designers like Heidi Merrick, Lorick, and my new covet, Fin, you are sure to find a sweet piece amongst the spare offerings. Also, you’re certain to wear something special and unique – not the staid J. Crew slipdresses everyone will be sporting. Check out my current covets:

Fin Eco Slouchy Dress, $300 (pictured at left) – I am OBSESSED with this dress; it just makes me smile.
Raquelle Hello Dotty Dress, $280
Lorick Dabney Dress in Salted Sands, $363
Kloset Grand Entrance Dress, $418
Heidi Merrick Aunt Judy Dress, $530 (yes, I normally eschew ruffles, but I’m breaking down)
