conjure your inner temptress: d.l. & co’s black dahlia candle
While I loathe marking the passage of time — a sheet of paper ripped from a desk calendar — with promises that will inevitably go unkept and goals too lofty, unrealistic and unattainable to be met, there is something auspicious about acknowledging what came before and how that journey leads you to what’s next. I don’t craft “resolutions”, rather I take a look an aerial look at my life in order to identify the next step in the journey. As cliche as that may sound, I never disappoint myself and I always feel connected to myself beyond the New Year, New You gimmicks and industry.
If asked to describe myself never would I use the words siren, seductress or temptress. While my lips are awash in rubies and something about my coloring evokes the nocturnal, I’m inherently drawn to the sweet, conservative and safe. And although I love my boyfriend cardigans and jasmine scents, as of late I’ve been yearning for a hint of the viper. Kohl eyes, orchids, curve-clinging silhouettes and dahlias. All things Greek, dark and mythic.
Perhaps this is what has drawn me to studded shoes, kittenish 40s wool dresses and D.L. & Co.’s Black Dahlia Candle ($75). From the dramatic amethyst scalloped glass to the flickering triptych illumines to the lush and spicy jasmine, sandalwood, amber and black pepper – you will want to be enveloped by this sensual scent. The candle draws inspiration from the Black Dahlia, a legendary Hollywood temptress, and you can almost see the noir satin gowns and sanguine boudoirs. Gloved hands and alabaster skin. I adore this candle because it’s a departure from the familiar, from what I know. And although that may sound trite (it’s a candle, after all), I think it’s important to embark on minor leaps and small changes in preparation for the more substantive ones.
So here’s to a new decade. One where I reinvent my former dangerous self to a more adventurous one. One foot in front of the other.
