giveaways until christmas: the swathe yourself in chic edition!
There was once a fine year. There was a tree, a glass bejeweled angel that grazed the ceiling, and scarlet ribbons, which scattered the carpet and lay before my small feet. We had a cat that year, and for reason we were fearful of its sex. Our home smelled of pine and pine sol. That evening we would fire up the skillet and I would hear the crackle and hiss of the oil on the pan, the crunch of bread crumbs and egg on my tongue, and the slightly tough taste of the cutlets, the cream of the boxed mashed potatoes. But what I remembered most was my mother, and how her embrace that morning swathed me like a blanket, it was all that I thought I’d ever need. Who could want more than this? Shelter. Home. Safe.
That Christmas morning the world was reduced to just us, a mother’s strong arms around her small, bashful, winsome girl. And a woman who refused to combine my birthday and Christmas, even though they were a week apart. We believed in our minor celebrations. Perhaps that’s one of things of which I’ll always remember. Last week, I thumbed through my book and part of me feels as if it were written in a different language, because the woman I was then is markedly different than the one before you now. And although it’s impossible to forget and possibly forgive my mother’s theft of my childhood and all that followed, I’d be remiss if I didn’t admit my sadness, especially as my birthday and Christmas near. My want for her is sometimes dangerous, a painful ache, a distinct longing. Because part of me will always be that child cleaving to the deceptively stronger woman, even though the reality is that I have become stronger than she. Funny how time sorts things.
I’ll admit, I hadn’t anticipated this introduction to a giveaway. But when I typed the word “swathe” I thought of embrace, comfort, shield, want, love, her. So forgive me this trespass, and perhaps take of this the idea of seeking those in your life who give you warmth and shelter. Don’t be ashamed to crave that embrace, to pull a friend close and ask for a hug.
