covet this: it’s going to be a bold spring

From Kate Winslet’s striking sapphire Narciso Rodriguez to the Mary Poppins goes to Dubai colorful and fanciful frocks at the Marc Jacobs SS09 shows, to the hopeful pages of thinning fashion magazines, everyone is talking-highly saturated bold colors for spring, which after the winter we’ve been having in the Northeast, is downright refreshing. For years my wardrobe was morose – suits, sweaters and dresses in varying shades of somber black, blue and gray. I was a fan of the monochromatic, and when you’re rushing to catch the subway black always goes with black. Donning all black was chic, easy, but also incredibly safe. But over the past few years – call it being surrounded by fashionable friends or a lax in my Type A attitude – color has slowly found its way into my closet. And yesterday I was shocked to see its evolution: fuschias, luscious greens, poppy, terracotta, and violet. I had found color.

But let’s be realistic. I’m 33, and dressing like a Gossip Girl teenager is not only ridiculous, but it’s inappropriate. I’m at the age where I have to start using words like “age-appropriate,” and that’s fine, but playing with insane trends in color (piling it on ala Tokyo chic) isn’t going to work. So for me, it’s about one piece that pops, updating my classics. Because the black pants and gray sweaters haven’t gone anywhere. So I’ve done some quick searches and here are a few of my favorite pieces in paintbox perfect hues.
