fab finds: lizzy grant: kill kill

Maybe she reminds you of Cat Power with a touch of Billie Holiday. Maybe. Aimee Mann? Hmm, not really. Sometimes you think you catch glimpses of Nico and “The Fairest of the Seasons” or “Winter Song” – not for any vocal comparisons perse, but for the way in which an artist irks you, crawls under your skin and takes up house. Lizzy Grant is the kind of singer/songwriter that walks into your home and has no intentions of leaving. And just when you were about to draw an easy comparison, Grant’s voice pulls the proverbial rug right from under you.

Grant’s music is impossibly original, her songs decidedly anti-genre: the songs on her splendid debut, Kill Kill offer an eclectic mix of jazz, pop, electronica, rock, blues and hopeful melancholy. Her videos are quirky, odd, and magical. And her voice – that voice! Heavy, throaty, breathy, soulful and haunting – images of a nomadic gypsy come to mind. And while scores of other artists attempt to craft pithy esoteric poetry, Grant’s lyrics are wholly dark, elegant, and beautiful.

And who doesn’t love a local girl? Check out Lizzy Grant’s website & MySpace page. And please, please, please buy her songs on iTunes.
